How to Split a Bill When Two People Paid
Two cards paid for dinner. Here is how to work out who still owes whom without charging anyone twice.
A person’s share is what they owe for the meal. Their payment is what they already put toward the bill. Subtract the share from the payment: a positive balance means they should receive money; a negative balance means they still owe.
A $120 dinner, three equal shares
Alex paid $90 and Sam paid $30. Maya paid nothing. Each person’s share is $40. Alex should receive $50, Sam owes $10 and Maya owes $40. Sam sends Alex $10 and Maya sends Alex $40. Do not ask Sam for another $40: that would ignore the $30 already paid.

What if one friend pays back only part?
If Maya sends $20 now, record $20 after it arrives. Her remaining $20 stays outstanding. Keep related dinners in a private group and record settlements there. For eligible ungrouped bills you paid, use Debts. The app records repayments; your usual payment app sends the money.
For the friend who handles the table
Use actual orders when one person skipped drinks, and include tax and tip before checking the final total. Save a trip’s bills in its own group so repayments do not get mixed with the house groceries. Different currencies stay separate.
