How should roommates split rent when the bedrooms are different sizes?
Agree a percentage per room once, then apply it every month. Square footage is the usual basis, adjusted for an en-suite or a room with no window. Writing the percentages down is what stops the conversation reopening.
Should utilities be split evenly or by usage?
Evenly, in most houses, because metering per person is not possible and the amounts are small enough that precision costs more goodwill than it saves. The exception is when one person is home all day and everyone knows it.
Can I set up the same split to repeat every month?
Each month is entered as its own split rather than recurring automatically. That is more typing, but it means a month where the electricity doubled or someone was away is recorded as it actually happened.
What happens when one person pays the whole bill and gets paid back?
The split records what each person owed for that month, which is the number to settle against. Money moves in whatever payment app the house already uses, so there is no shared balance to reconcile inside this one.
How do we handle a roommate moving out mid-month?
Split that month between the people who actually lived there, and enter a part-month figure the household agrees rather than expecting exact proration. Most disputes come from the handover month, so writing it down matters most there.
