Split a Refund for One Returned Receipt Item
Give an item refund back to the people who funded that item.
Give an item refund back to the people who funded that item. Do not divide the refund across everyone merely because they were on the original receipt.
Preserve the original breakdown, identify the returned line and confirm the refund received. If the item was shared, follow its original share ratio. Handle any nonrefunded delivery fee separately. Correct the expense or record the adjustment once; avoid both methods together.
Worked example
A’s item cost 24 and B’s item cost 36: total 60. A’s item is returned and 24 is actually refunded. Final retained purchase: 36, all assigned to B. A’s final purchase cost is zero; B’s remains 36.
| Allocation | Amount |
|---|---|
| A | 0.00 |
| B | 36.00 |
| Total | 36.00 |
Record the result
Agree the rule first, then enter the calculated amounts and actual payer in SPLIIT Pro. Assign each amount to the relevant people and review the total before sharing the breakdown. The private expense group keeps related bills and recorded partial repayments together. Friends can read shared breakdowns without installing the app; they do not edit your group. Transfer money through another method and record repayment only after it arrives.
These are illustrative units, not current prices. Use the actual bill, currency and agreement; the calculation is explained here, not promised as an automatic feature. Scanning needs a connection and review. The app is free to start with usage limits; Pro adds capacity and removes ads.
Frequently asked questions
What if the refund has not arrived yet?
Keep the expected refund separate from the confirmed expense adjustment. A merchant’s promise is not cash received. Update the breakdown when the refund is confirmed, noting any retained fee rather than assuming the entire original charge was reversed.
