Split a Road Trip Detour Requested by One Passenger
Keep the shared route under the trip’s normal rule and separate a specifically agreed detour cost.
Keep the shared route under the trip’s normal rule and separate a specifically agreed detour cost. Do not turn the entire fuel bill into the requester’s expense.
Agree what counts as incremental cost: extra fuel, parking or a toll caused by the detour. A precise estimate needs an agreed distance and consumption basis; otherwise use a negotiated amount. Vehicle wear and time are separate agreements, not automatic app calculations.
Worked example
The normal route costs 90 units for three people. An agreed detour adds 15 and is assigned to A. Shares: A 45, B 30 and C 30; total 105. The detour does not change the equal allocation of the original 90.
| Allocation | Amount |
|---|---|
| A | 45.00 |
| B | 30.00 |
| C | 30.00 |
| Total | 105.00 |
Record the result
Agree the rule first, then enter the calculated amounts and actual payer in SPLIIT Pro. Assign each amount to the relevant people and review the total before sharing the breakdown. The private expense group keeps related bills and recorded partial repayments together. Friends can read shared breakdowns without installing the app; they do not edit your group. Transfer money through another method and record repayment only after it arrives.
These are illustrative units, not current prices. Use the actual bill, currency and agreement; the calculation is explained here, not promised as an automatic feature. Scanning needs a connection and review. The app is free to start with usage limits; Pro adds capacity and removes ads.
Frequently asked questions
Should every road-trip fuel stop be split equally?
Equal shares work when everyone shares the route under that agreement. Separate personal detours or a changed passenger list when relevant. Use actual receipts and the agreed rule; SPLIIT Pro does not track mileage or automatically price vehicle wear.
